About the artist

Nash Caldera is a visual and performance artist from Curaçao, based in the Netherlands. Working with photography, video, installation, sound and performance, she explores and attempts to understand the multiplicity of her identity as a Queer Black Woman from Curaçao. She intends to create new narratives and new understanding of the notion of home by looking into the idea of nostalgia, and how our senses trigger memories that might let us experience the feeling of home even in other places. Spirituality, food, language and superstition are very present in Caldera’s practice, which gives her space to play around with different concepts of dimensions and time. Her work makes people FEEL. In 2018 Nash Caldera graduated with a BA in Fine Art (2018) from the Willem de Kooning Academy (WdKA) in Rotterdam where she also teaches in various projects (2020-2022). In her graduation year she was nominated for the Drempelprijs and the Maaskantprijs both from the WdKA. She continued her education in Art Praxis at DAI Roaming Academy a.k.a. Dutch Art Institute (2022). Nash Caldera performed “Di Tera Nos Ta Bin Di Tera Nos Ta Bai II” at several art institutions in The Netherlands, such as Het Nieuwe Institute, Rotterdam (2018/2020) and Galerie Lecq, Rotterdam(2018). In 2019 she collaborated with a former classmate on a performance called “My Broken Tongue” (TAC, Eindhoven). Nash performed the “Adorá Yemayá Tapá” which was a live performance, based on an earlier video performance at Framer Framed’s werkplaats Molenwijk in Amsterdam (2019). Caldera’s performance “Mansa” was part of the opening of the “Van Amulet tot Artefact” exhibition. In collaboration with Umma Chroma, Caldera, together with other performers, took part in an installation at the exhibition “G/D Thyself: Spirit Strategy On Raising Free Black Children” at Het Nieuwe Institute during the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2020. In 2019 she participated in the project “WHO AM I BECOMING” which was then made into a film (screened at the IFFR). With her own showroom “Kontemplashon di Multiplisidat den Kontekstonan” she took part in an online exhibition on the platform EL PRAN Projecten (2021). Nash Caldera was an artist in residence at Uniarte (Curaçao, 2020) and at VHDG (Leeuwarden, 2021), where, in 2022 she also had her first solo exhibition “(PLANT-IN)-Different-Soil”.
