About the artist
La Lola Rizo is a non-binary artivist, educator and performer based in Nicaragua. Their practice is centered around community organizing and the expanded multimedia, political drag cabaret, experimenting with diverse performative elements and addressing current issues that range from post-Cold War politics, queer identity, memory and drag imperialism. La Lola Rizo is a member of the Nicaraguan Operacion Queer collective and has been an active organizer of different queer artivist projects in Central America, such as the experimental drag space "La Discordia Travesti" in Guatemala, the first-ever Nicaragua-Costa Rica queer visual memory archive "Memorias Marica Transfronterizas Rio San Juan", and two editions of their own international anti-beauty pageant "Mix Imperial Central American Tropical Drag Royale". La Lola Rizo’s work has been subject to diverse grants and awards including: La Bienal en Resistencia Award (2019), El Flotador Grant (2019) and Catalizador Grant (2022) from Teorética, a Research and Travel Grant from FFAI (2022), and the Prince Claus Seed Award (2023).
